Why gutter cleaning is not a weekend DIY job
Plenty of household jobs are worth doing yourself. This one has an unusually bad ratio of money saved to risk taken, and it is worth being clear-eyed about why.
The risk is the ladder, not the roof
Falls from ladders are a leading cause of serious home-maintenance injury in Australia, and older men doing routine outdoor jobs are heavily over-represented in the figures. It is not dramatic — most falls are from a modest height onto a hard surface, which is more than enough for a fractured wrist, hip or worse.
The specific problem with gutter work is that it combines every risk factor at once:
- You are reaching sideways. Rather than repositioning the ladder every metre, everybody stretches "just a bit further". That is the movement that tips a ladder.
- Your hands are full and wet. You are holding debris, a scoop or a hose, so you are not maintaining three points of contact.
- The ground is rarely level. Garden beds, sloped driveways, soft turf after rain.
- You are looking up. Head back, weight shifted, on a narrow rung.
On the hilly suburbs — Highland Park, Pacific Pines, Reedy Creek — there is often nowhere level to foot a ladder on the high side of the house at all.
Double storey is a different category
A fall from single-storey gutter height can break something. A fall from double-storey height is a life-changing injury, and a lot of Gold Coast housing stock is two or three storeys — most of Robina and Varsity Lakes, Pimpama and the newer estates generally.
There is no version of this where a household ladder makes a two-storey gutter clean safe. If your home is double storey, get a quote rather than a ladder.
The insurance point nobody mentions
If you fall doing your own maintenance, that is on your personal cover. If someone you hired falls on your property and they do not carry public liability, that can become your problem. Ask to see the certificate. Anyone working at height professionally has one and expects to be asked — the ones who get cagey about it are telling you something useful.
When DIY is genuinely fine
Being honest about it: single storey, low-set, level ground all the way around, a stable ladder someone is footing for you, and a roofline you can reach without stretching. That is a real situation and plenty of people manage it safely for years.
What changes the answer is height, slope, or doing it alone. If any of those apply, the couple of hundred dollars is not really buying a clean gutter — it is buying somebody else's ladder, harness and insurance.
